Can’t Stop Eating the Halloween Candy? You’re Not Alone.

Let me guess how this went.

You bought the Halloween candy early because you’re a responsible adult who plans ahead. You put it somewhere sensible…on the high shelf, back of the pantry, maybe behind the slow cooker you use twice a year.

And then you found yourself standing in the kitchen eating multiple fun-size Snickers over the sink.

Turns out, you have plenty of company.

Confessions of a Halloween Candy Restocker

The average American eats through their Halloween candy stash twice before a single trick-or-treater rings the doorbell. And 26% say they’ve had to restock three times or more, according to a 2025 Talker Research survey of 2,000 Americans. And then there’s this - 83% of parents (me included!) admit to sneaking candy from their kids’ bags. Yeah, truth. So, the candy shows up in September. Halloween is one night. That’s weeks of “fun-size-treat-tunity”.

After 30 years in preventive health, I can tell you what’s going on here: proximity and duration beat intention. Put a bowl of candy within arm’s reach for a month and anyone will eat it. That isn’t weakness. The fix isn’t more willpower. It’s better planning.

Four fixes that don’t require giving up candy

1. Buy it on the 30th. You can’t graze on what isn’t in your house. This one change removes four weeks of daily decisions.

2. Buy a kind you don’t love. If Smarties bore you, hand out Smarties. Save your favorites for the night itself.

3. Never walk past the bowl hungry. Most 4 p.m. candy raids are really a blood-sugar rescue. Get a palm of protein and some fiber at lunch, and the bowl loses most of its pull (TODAY).

4. Make it one night, not one month. Dietitians and dentists agree that the trouble isn’t Halloween night. It’s the bowl still sitting there on November 12th. Give away the leftovers the next day.

If you’re choosing

Candy is candy, and I’m not here (ever) to label any of it “bad.” That said, some picks may align better with your goals and satisfy you more:

·        Dark chocolate, 70% or higher. It has more flavanols and less sugar per bite.

·        Anything with a nut. Peanut M&M’s, Reese’s, Snickers. The fat and protein keep you fuller.

·        Fun size. The wrapper gives you a natural place to stop. A bowl doesn’t.

The bigger idea

One thoughtful choice becomes a habit. Habits become your lifestyle. Your lifestyle becomes your future.

So, this year, don’t white-knuckle it. Just buy the candy on the 30th. And begin again.
